Patterns of Refractive Errors among Medical Students at the University of Zambia School of Medicine

Background: Uncorrected refractive error is one of the leading causes visual impairment and blindness world-over. The distribution pattern presentation variable depending on various factors. Regardless type, errors are easily correctable with spectacles if diagnosed early.
 Objective: objective this study was to evaluate among medical students at University Zambia - School Medicine.
 Methodology: This a cross-sectional conducted Teaching Hospitals-Eye Hospital involving Master Medicine, Surgery (MBChB) from third seventh year Ridgeway campus between October 2021 March 2022. A total 210 participants were recruited in study. Subjects had non-cycloplegic autorefraction combined researcher administered questionnaire. Spherical equivalents (SE) ≥ 0.50D determined as myopia; SE + hyperopia -0.50D cylinder astigmatism. Statistical analysis carried out using Stata version 13.0.
 Results: One hundred forty-one (67.1%) subjects form error; 56.0%, 31.2% 12.8% them astigmats, myopes or hyperopes, respectively. prevalence ametropia 65.0 % females 69.0 males. Minus spherical ranged -0.25 -5.00D plus +0.25 +3.00D. mean equivalent for group -0.45D. Parental history significantly associated diagnosis (p=0.001) while age gender not (p = 0.428 0.530, respectively). majority (68.6%) aware their error.
 Conclusion: high, astigmatism being most common type. those found diagnosis.
